Sex Hormone Binding Globulin and Testosterone
Sex Hormone Binding Globulin or SHBG is protein that can binds sex hormones like free testosterone and female hormones such as estrogen. SHGB acts as a reservoir that can supplement the bio-available free testosterone when levels drop in men. In women, SHBG binds male androgens like DHT and testosterone to limit the androgenizing effects of these hormones. SHBG levels are almost twice as high in women than men. In some men SHBG can be abnormally high and lower the bio-available free testosterone by over binding. In these cases where SHBG is high, it may be useful to use certain supplements known to lower SHBG.
- Boron. Boron is a rare mineral found in the earth’s crust. Studies have suggested that Boron supplementation may decrease SHBG and boost testosterone levels. The levels of Boron like many other trace minerals are deficient in our diets because of industrial farming and diets which lack good quantities of fruits and vegetables.
- Vitamin D. Vitamin D is responsible for over 200 different functions in the human body.
